Membership FAQs

How old do you have to be to join the credit union?

If you are 14 years old or older, you can have your own account at the credit union, which you can use for deposits and withdrawals. Click here for information on our Teen Accounts.

Children younger than 14 years old need to be on an account with an adult.

Do I have to live in Central Brooklyn to open an account?

Brooklyn Coop’s Field of Membership are the Brooklyn Community Districts representing Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, East New York, and Brownsville, as well as Ridgewood in Queens. You don’t have to live in these neighborhoods to open an account, but you should have some connection. For example, if your family members live here, if you go to church or work in these neighborhoods, or if you have family or operate a business here, those facts count as connections to our communities.

What do I need to open an account?

Please bring an unexpired government issued identification card with a photograph. Also, if you have your social security card or ITIN letter, please bring these.  If you do not have these original documents, we will verify your tax ID number with the Social Security Administration.

Also please bring proof of your address, such as a bill that has been mailed to your address in your name. If your current address is listed on your government-issued photo ID, that is enough.

There is a one-time $25 nonrefundable membership fee to join the credit union, and you must maintain the membership share (currently $5) in your savings account at all times.

Do I need to open an account if I want to apply for a loan?

Yes. The credit union can only take loan applications from current members.

If you are seeking a pre-approval for a mortgage, please inquire directly with our Loan Officers at loans[a]brooklyn.coop
