Reflections on the past decades

Blog by Rebecaa Pear & Claudia Fernandez May 6,2026

I’m an immigrant. I came to this country twenty years ago. I didn’t know many things about life in the US and even less about how the financial system worked. It didn’t take long before I knew things weren’t so glamorous and that credit was a must if you wanted to rent or buy an apartment, have a credit card or get a loan.

While I was in school, an opportunity came along to interview for a job with Brooklyn Coop. I knew I wanted to help people in situations like mine, to use my Spanish and apply my prior experience in business & marketing on a corporate level to a role in a non-profit. I studied the web page and job description; I was so nervous to interview with the CEO! I had interviewed with another credit union for a marketing job, but when I met Samira, I just knew I wanted to work for BCoop. I was impressed by the mission, how the credit union was founded and her being so knowledgeable.

As you can guess, I got the job as loan officer. In a small organization, we need to adapt and learn many things quickly. I learned how to open accounts, how to explain what we do, attend events, do underwriting, do business loans, and after a few years facilitate mortgages.

I have witnessed the credit union grow through many events: a pandemic, economic turmoil, my own pregnancy and all the flexibility I got from BCoop. I’ve met many people in credit unions and partner organizations, developed extraordinary friendships and I hope I have made a difference in people’s lives. We are living challenging times now but the credit union has evolved and reinvented itself. It makes me proud and happy that I have stayed with BCoop all these years. Our new building represents lot of effort and a long-time commitment to our community. I’m honored to be part of the team.

Hi!  I’m Rebecca Pear, Chief Experience Officer at Brooklyn Coop.  On the occasion of our 25th Anniversary, I was asked to write a bit about my time here. I joined Brooklyn Coop 16 years ago on Valentine’s Day to build and run a small business tax prep program.  After a couple years, I passed the program into Tammy Will’s capable hands and changed roles to support the Member Services team.  Before starting at Brooklyn Coop I had not worked for a company for more than 3 years.  The two most salient reasons why I’ve stayed as long as I have are 1) Brooklyn Coop’s mission to provide just and affordable financial services and 2) knowing that my ideas have always been heard in this small and nimble organization.

I am truly grateful for Brooklyn’s small credit union with a big heart and very proud of all we have accomplished.

Brooklyn Coop has grown a lot since I started and has been through a lot too.  We went through a pandemic and figured out how to stay open while other banks closed their Brooklyn neighborhood branches in favor of their more profitable Manhattan locations.  With our PPP loan program, we showed up for small businesses when all the banks said “sorry, you’re too small to matter”.  In my current role, I continue to push for new technology that will truly improve our member’s user experience.  I oversaw our move to make our cards chip enabled, then contactless, then compatible with digital wallets.  In the past few years, with payments technology changing as rapidly as it has, we’ve been introducing new payments methods each year, including 2-Day Early ACH Deposits, Rapid Transfers, and coming soon – BkPay$ for sending money instantly, and Tap2Local, allowing businesses to instantly collect payments.

Reflecting on the incredible growth Brooklyn Coop has experienced in 25 years, I am proud of my 16 years’ contribution.  I look forward to seeing what Brooklyn Coop with become over the next 25 years!
